Kim Burrell, Extreme Makeover: Church Edition lol
Many fans of Kim Burrell have been waiting on her breakout hit that will allow her talents to be showcased to the world, more in the mainstream. Today, I received a text from a friend to checkout reports of her launching a secular album and a VH1 tv show. I said to myself, "No!" Well, this is true.
You can see the site for yourself with a slimmer, happy Burrell.
Eventhough the site states that the album will be 'secular,' this could be a publicity stunt to get the buzz needed to release her next album. Her last project 'No Ways Tired.' received lackluster publicity and airplay at best.
The site also notes that the Lewis Agency is representing her now. I worked with the agency's president, Krishnar Lewis, on a film in 2009. So, once discovering who was behind this image makeover, Lewis' glamourous New York style and Hollywood persona shouted from the photos posted on her new site. I know he will push her as far as he can to make her more of a mainstream artist.
She already has superstar fans outside of the gospel music industry and can be credited with being an influence to Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, Omarion and other artists in hip-hop/R&B. Recently, she sang at the BET Honors ceremony to honor Whitney Houston. What other artist in the music industry has this much credit within the music industry but not be known to the mainstream?
It is her time!
The fishnet stockings and miracle push-up bra she adorned in her new photos were a little too much though. lol
Many of her fans wish her the best, but will the church? She is a staple in the music ministry of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), serving as a music department official and also as co-pastor of the Jericho City COGIC here in Houston, TX.
